Doctor Strange

Image
BBFC rating 12 Released 25th October 2016 Directed by Scott Derrickson After numerous Marvel films coming out for the last 8 years, Doctor Strange brings a new look into the spectrum of superhero films in the form of magic, unfortunately it wasn't as much as a break through as was hoped. The film is much too short to be trying to introduce a brand new character into a universe full of different ones, and leaves a lot of the characters underdeveloped, instead focusing on trying to fill in all the points it needed to, and focusing a lot on graphic design and effects, moving away from development of Doctor Strange himself. It got to a point at the end of the film where I didn't see Strange as a powerful sorcerer, but still just a trainee. It's the same issue with the main villain, which had a total screen time of around 10 minutes. However, the visuals are amazing, bring a lot of CGI into the mix to create visually challenging and gripping sequences that looks like i...

Deadpool

Image
BBFC rating 15 Released 14th Febuary 2016 Directed by Tim Miller After the film X-men origins Wolverine absolutely butchered the character of Deadpool, as well as any hopes for further X-men spin off movies, Ryan Reynolds and Tim Miller saw to do the character some justice in the form of this film. It's essentially another origins movie underneath but yet helps to flip the superhero genre on its head, making many jokes seen unfit for a film aimed at younger viewers, yet fits the character precisely, as well as the well loved 4th wall breaks randomly coming up in the film that helps to throw the audience off balance. The only problem with this many jokes is that they start to become very repetitive, with a lot of crude humour that seems very filling. The only time this dissent seem to happen is when the character makes well placed continuity jokes, that helps to remind us that this is a film that isn't meant to be picked apart, making this review pointless in a way. Anywa...

Popstar: Never stop never stopping

Image
BBFC rating 15 released: August 26th 2016 From comedy group ' The Lonely island ' comes this hilarious original film that was probably the best comedy from 2016, its that good. The lonely island comes back to what they are great at in the film, having a film based on the radical lifestyle of a 'Popstar' ( see what they did there), and writing the songs that he would eventually sing to the world. Of course these are not your run of the mill songs, with one talking about sexy times in the context of the death of Bin Laden, another that talks about how the Mona Lisa is a piece of carp, and one that spends the whole song telling us that Andy Samberg's character is straight. As well as that there are a load other moments of crude humour that is actually quite funny, in a world full of rubbish jokes in movies, as well as some great story, directing the film as if it where almost a documentary, allowing for some great cameos in the film, such as Snoop Dogg and Martin...

London has fallen

Image
Released 3rd March 2016 BBFC rating 15 Directed by Babak Najafi The sequel to Olympus has fallen returns with the so called 'London has fallen ', spoiler alert, London falls. That could probably be guessed, as could the rest of the film, which is just a cliche one after the other, with not a lot in between each of them. As well as the the effects are terrible, with most of them looking like something you would see out of a power rangers tv show, and it is not as if that had to be done, decent effects could have been used with a budget of 60 million. As well as this the dialogue is rubbish, with time taken out of the action to explain that Gerald Butler is thirsty, with a lot of unnecessary F-bombs throughout the whole film. As well as that there is homophobic and racist comments which adds nothing to the film at all, as well as rubbish action sequences between Gerald and some unknown terrorist, which is never clearly defined in the film, as well as the fact that the good...

Star Trek beyond

Image
Released 22nd July 2016 BBFC rating 12 Directed by Justin Lin After the brilliance that was 'Into Darkness', the Star Trek reboot prequel series has returned for the third instalment with a new hand at the helm, Fast and Furious director James Wan. The film starts off as traditional Star Trek film, with the enterprise doing basic missions, until it is tricked and abandoned on a planet fighting against Idris Elba's 'Krall'. The film certainly has the attitude of the last one with the same amount of drama, mixed with sci find action, and a lot of Fast-and-Furious-isms thrown into the film, which really sets it apart from the other two previous films. But it certainly still holds up, with more comedy than the last films, as well as the run of the mill Enterprise getting destroyed scene.  The returning cast are excellent as usual with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Simon Pegg reprising there well loved roles, with new-comer Zoe Salander joking the crew also. As w...

Hacksaw Ridge

Image
Released 26th January 2017 (U.K) BBFC rating 15 Directed by Mel Gibson Hacksaw Ridge follows the journey of a medic in world war 2, played by Andrew Garfield, who refuses to kill another man due to his pacifism. As well a this though it doubles as a true story of the events on hacksaw ridge portrayed well through the attention to detail in the plot as well as the set. The graphics of the injuries helps to show the devastation of what happened on the ridge. The film does well to balance the emotional effects of the character and the violence and action of the actual battle, delving in and out of each at points in the film, keeping it very connecting and emotive to the audience. Also, it doesn't hold back when it comes to violence, showing a lot of scenes, that at some point seem quite unexpected and unnecessary to the plot ( Mel Gibson scenes), and others that show the true horror of the event, such as a lot of Japanese suicide scenes. In my opinion the film should have won...
