Tarantino movies are certainly a staple of modern cinema, the name alone is up there with Spielberg and Nolan in its ability to pull in audiences with the credit alone. His movies are filled with expectation and go to features that mark them out from other big releases; particularly the violence. Once upon a time in Hollywood would seem a turn in direction then for the acclaimed director. The film follows the later stages of the career of actor Rick Dalton ( DiCaprio ) and his stunt double Cliff Booth ( Pitt)in the golden age of Hollywood movie making. The film basically acts as a massive homage to films from the era, filled with references and stories from around the time - and for me it really worked well as as a story. It is obviously a very different story to what we're used to from Tarantino, but it was still very enjoyable, with very compelling main characters and well known personalities along the way really cementing the feel of the era. I for one really liked this smaller premise, I found a really good connection to some of the characters and really enjoyed the classic cut-aways to lay down the history of Daltons career. However I also still found it very surprising in some places, going in directions you don't always expect (  again another Tarantino trope ) keeping the story fresh. I think some characters we could have seen a bit more of, mainly Robbie's Sharon Tate who was really good for the short amount of time we see her in however would have been nice to have her more included, as well as Al-Pacino who could have played a bit more into the story. Overall though I really had fun with it, definitely up there with inglorious basterds on the directors repertoire and definitely a stand out of the year.

Top Gun: Maverick

Some of pulled it off really well, with films like Blade Runner 2049 almost being better than the original, some not so well like independence day resurgence, some being a bit of fun to pass off as alright with Jurassic World, and some being The Force Awakens. How these movies do well is another story, now though the latest movie to try its hand at a legacy reboot is Top Gun. No matter what you think of the original it is fair to say that the cultural impact and quotability is much greater than any plot point in the originals story, with not much to go on past some manliness and jet fighters. Deadpool 2

The film revolves around Wade Wilson, AKA Deadpool ( Reynolds ) attempting to save Firefist ( Dennison ) from time travelling assassin Cable ( Brolin ). While using similar ideas and call-backs to the first film, this one feels completely different, and in some senses more like Deadpool than before, filled with more references and nit pics to Dc than before, and arguably better action. The film also remembers to not take itself too seriously like the other one did, with more events in the film which try and mess with the timeline as much as possible without caring about the outcome.
