Its fair to be in a position where you haven't really been impacted by the Mission impossible movies. As someone who has only seen the first one and the two prior to this I wouldn't blame you, while they are solid action movies in their own right, standing out with dramatic spectacles and stunts, they all seemed like the action movies that came out around the same time. So, how is Mission Impossible 6 any different? This one picks up directly after the last, with the remnants of the Syndicate forming a new big bad in the form of the Apostles, lead by a mysterious John Lark. I'll try and avoid spoilers in this review but in the off-chance of revealing anything I'll warn against reading much further. What I will say about it is this, I really really enjoyed this instalment. When the trailers dropped I was sceptical, however after blistering reviews I saw at and was blown away, possibly going as far to saw the joint best film of 2018 ( next weeks review reveals the other ). I think for me what change the franchise for me was the change in tone. Most of the others focus on him being all rogue and disavowed and after a while the stakes just got lost on me. However having the team being constantly behind on what is going on, always under pressure and forever in danger really made the film more enjoyable to watch. The stunts have more weight to them, the action feels more real and up-close to you, the soundtrack is absolutely stunning, and all the twists and turns in the film put you at the same point as the characters in the story, you know what they know and it adds to the levity of what is going on. The fact that is willing to take big risks is what makes it feel so great for me, and while some of the stunts aren't as big as others, such as the plane scene from 5 they are more exciting, you feel yourself really rooting for the characters to win here. This redesigned and redefined the franchise for me, managing to truly captivate my attention from start to finish in a way only a few action films can do these days. 2018 was full of very strong very good action flicks, non quite like this though.
Contains moderate bad language, violence and threat.
My rating: 9/10 ( Incredible )
