Dunkirk centres around the military evacuation of 400,000 troops from the French beaches, and looks at the different areas the scenarios take place. The three point of view each start off at different points, with the beaches events taking place over one week, the landing crafts events over one day, and the air support in one hour. This creates a spectacular narrative, with certain events overlapping, showing the action from different points of view. This film is simply spectacular, with great acting from newcomer Fionn Whitehead, and a brilliant screenplay from director Christopher Nolan. The film focuses on the action more than the dialogue in the most part, which creates an atmosphere of an action thriller or a horror movie rather than a historical drama, which creates a great sense of what the characters are going through, and places you in the action. This isn't just on the land either, a similar style is used for the planes, producing brilliant air sequences and dogfights. Nolan has not just focused in the imaging department, with brilliant sound which doesn't hold back, and produces properly load explosions and gun shots, which throws the audience into the battle, making most of the people I saw quite uncomfortable. But this is not a bad thing, as it allows the viewer to be with the frightened soldiers on the beaches. The supporting actors a great addition, with Harry Styles doing a great job to present the effects of the beach on a soldier. However, I would say that there aren't really any supporting actors in the film, as each has their own story to portray, with Hardy in the air, Whitehead on the ground, and Rylance on the sea. This all adds up to a film which never leaves you bored and on the edge of the seat, and brings a real sense of sadness yet joy when the film is closing, and doesn't forget the Winston Churchill speech which emerged from the disaster.
Contains violence, distressing scenes and mild bad language.
