A Star is Born

While Musicals have certainly become ever more popular, they have not become any more liked by me . I find that too often the story is sacrificed to make way for flashy songs that try to advance the plot, but instead actually take away from what you are watching, with other like Mamma Mia sort of getting it right with a soundtrack that fits the story: just not a very good story. This brings us to ' A Star is Born ', which may be the only musical I truly like. A Star is Born follows Jackson Maine ( Cooper ), a broken and alcoholic musician who is though to be truly lost and becomes a massive burden to those around him. On the other side of the story we have Lady Gaga's 'Ally' who has been shot into stardom by Cooper's Maine and has to subsequently deal with this new life while also handling her relationship with the aforementioned Maine. So, why does this musical stand out for me? well for starters I think this is just an amazing story - you really feel for every character in this movie, with stand out performances from Gaga in her first large role and also Sam Elliot, who really brings in some massive emotion to this film already jam packed full of feelings. however I also love the music of the film. In its subtle in the way it progresses the story, it doesnt interrupt what is going on, but actually adds to what we are seeing happen on screen, something benefited by the presence of Gaga I feel. there are of course bits I wasn't a fan of, I think it falls into the trap of trying to fit into the 'real world' by featuring things like SNL, which actually take away from this brilliant world you've created with really compelling characters. However: this for me is just a film I came out adoring, its such a fascinating story of brokenness that I think so many can relate to, and its one I would watch again almost immediately. A Star is born then is a musical I actually like, one which actually had an effect on me and one I actually fell drawn back into.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

After the vents of the first film, Eggsy (Edgerton) has joined the high ranks of the Kingsman, but after a Drug Lord (Moore) destroys the Kingsman, they seek refuge with the American cousins, the Statesman, and attempt to bring down the Golden Circle. Released 16th May 2018 BBFC rating 15 Directed by David Leitch Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison, Zazie Beetz After the overwhelming success of the first Deadpool film, the second instalment was inevitable, with the same formula that made the first one great. The film revolves around Wade Wilson, AKA Deadpool ( Reynolds ) attempting to save Firefist ( Dennison ) from time travelling assassin Cable ( Brolin ). While using similar ideas and call-backs to the first film, this one feels completely different, and in some senses more like Deadpool than before, filled with more references and nit pics to Dc than before, and arguably better action. The film also remembers to not take itself too seriously like the other one did, with more events in the film which try and mess with the timeline as much as possible without caring about the outcome.
