The Best Rom-Com?

Image
Another interesting topic today; Rom-Com's are very much something I tend to avoid, and for good reason. I don't think many of the are very good, even the ones that are highly recommended. So for me to say which is the best is something which is very hard, as surely even then it's not that good? Now I would be tempted to take the easy way out and say Shaun of the Dead which, while it is a rom-com ( Fact ) it does seem a bit cheat-y. However with Christmas round the corner I was recently reminded of one which I think is very good, very funny and something that you can easily to return to.  Guessed it yet? It's got to be Love Actually for me, a brilliant film telling lots of interesting stories with brilliant amalgamation of them all at the end. Why is it so good though? Well there are two aspects it has to hit, 1) it has to be funny and 2) has to have a good story. For the most part this film is very funny, I think there is good humour across the stories however the sta...

Chernobyl

Image
Released: July 2019 BBFC Rating: 15 Created by: Craig Mazin Cast: Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgard, Emily Watson Right, before you start, yes this is not technically a film, more of a mini-series per-say. However I have wanted to write about this for a while now as a) as you'll see it is amazing and b) I find the subject of Chernobyl very very fasinating indeed. Chernobyl is pretty self descriptive in the name, telling the story of 1986 disaster across 5 episodes which when sewn together could easily be mistaken for a very long film. I had been wating for something like this to come out for ages as Chernobyl is somehting that thoughrouly interested me yet i never fully understood it; from why it happened to the politics behind it, and is somehting I could write about in a historical analysis essay. However.... I am aware this is a film blog so I will keep my historical interest at bay for now. Chernobyl is a masterpiece in storytelling, giving the audeicne what they need to know whe...

Fury

Image
Released: 22nd October 2014 BBFC Rating: 15 Directed by: David Ayer Cast: Brad Pitt, Logan Lerman, Micheal Pena, Shia LeBeouf, John Bernthal It is odd that this week I would review a film all the way back from 2014, however upon conversation with people about what they have been watching very few have seen this war drama which is shocking as I think it is a very solid film, certianly an underrated one. The film would seem very run of the mill, new very young man joins tank crew cue tank battle cue war sadness cue end, however I think it is much more than that. From the very get go in this film you get a sense of a time in World War 2 that very few people would say they know much about: the final assult on Germany, or maybe thats just me. I think it tells a very intersting and important story to be told, to see not only what happened to the soldiers as the final days of the war drew nearer but also how the Germans and the surronding countries populous suffered as the slaughter drag...

What made Suicide Sqaud so bad?

Image
4 years ago Suicide squad was released to cinemas globally to...... mixed recption. On the whole fans were not pleased with David Ayer had produced and, while it was better than Batman v Superman, it just felt like a mess. However I seem to come away from it more negative than most ( which is odd for a so called DC-Fanboy ). But why was it so bad ? Well don't be suprised to hear that I have avoided this movie as much as possible since my last rewatch, but be best assured that the memory of it is certainly scolded into my brain. Suicide squad was supposed to be a fresh start for DC, we had new characters on film which for the most part were brand new to screens let alone cinema. Not to mention a star studded cast and large production value this was surley going to be an instant fan favorite. Cue Dawn of justice. Most will remeber the heavily negative reception when that was released ( at which point I was fairly posotive so to say ) which  set alarm bells ringing at DC. Where ...

Why John Wick is great

Image
This isn't the regular review you would see on this page - instead I want to take the time to talk about a personal favorite film and why I think it is such a good film. I can understand why some people may not like films like this, however in these posts I wish to just talk about why I like or dislike this film and hopefully in the future other films. Spoilers ahead ( but seriously its been 6 years ! ) Picture the scene: It's 2014, action films are all the rage in the cinemas at the moment, with the Marvel films on the rise and every other release being a fast paced thriller filled with 12 rated violence which people can barley understand. The Bourne films and the Taken franchise are what seems to fill the non-comic book action franchise and its safe to say their quality was dropping. Enter John Wick.  Now if I'm honest I can remeber seeing the poster for this film and making the immediate judgment " Really?, not another pointless and mindless action movie ( That loo...

Tenet

Image
Released: 26th August 2020 BBFC Rating: 12 Directed by: Christopher Nolan Cast: John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Sir Kenneth Branagh, Elizebeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia Its been 6 months without a major cinema release and excitment is certainly in the air for Nolans new blockbuster: Tenet. Tipped to be the saviour of cinema Nolan returns to type to give us a mind bending spy thriller which acts like a cross between James Bond and Incpetion. Spoilers ahead if you've not seen the film please read after seeing it. Tenet follows an unamed protagonist ( Washington ) as he attempts to stop Armaggedeon being caused by Andrei Sator ( Branagh ). The selling point of this film is what is known as inversion in the film, the ability for people or objects to act in reverse to the normal. You can be forgiven for bein confused, becuase if I'm honest, so was I. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed this film, however trying to work out all the characters movements at every time did t...

DC - Whats going on there?

As some of you may have seen; DC held their own mini Comic-con last weekend, showcasing a wide variety of new projects ranging from live action blockbusters to animated adaptions to two ( yes TWO !! ) next generation video games. However what I want to talk about is the upcoming movies they have announced. Over the weekend we got two trailers for Wonder Woman 1984 and Zac Snyder's Justice League, a teaser for The Batman, a look into The Suicide Squad and a conformation intro that Black Adam is still happening in the not too distant future. I want to talk about all these individually in this post, and also what this means for the ongoing DC cinematic universe. The Batman My personal favorite reveal from the event, we got the first reveal of Matt Reeves' the Batman, which looks amazing might I add! I love this new gothic take on the character - delving mroe into dark and gritty crimes with real detective work and a feeling not too dissimilar to David Finchers Se7en. My inital th...
