Bond 25: No time to Die
What do we Actually know about Bond 25?
Last week we got the confirmation that the next Bond film will be titled ' No time to die ', and it was followed with a confirmed release date of 3rd April 2020. As well as being the last film with Daniel Craig in the role of James Bond it may also be the film to cap off the this whole storyline set up in Casino Royale and brought together by Spectre. This film is also very significant in terms of Pop culture, with the rise of the superhero genre ( a topic which I am currently writing about ) dominating modern cinema, and this latest instalment of the classic franchise being one of the few in 2020 which will stand as part of a popular series but not exist in the format of a cinematic universe. So lets discuss what we know about the film so far, what the story is going to be, possible connections to the other films and more importantly how it will stand out not only against the previous 4 films but also in the industry all together. If you want to avoid spoilers then be aware that this could ruin the story, however most is speculation and not enough has really been released to ruin it.
No time to die has been in the news a lot, gaining traction through director changes, rumours around who is going to be involved and how it will exist in the current run of films. Daniel Craig is set to return for this film, being confirmed by the Actor himself as well as the promotional material released with the title and date of the film. This was quite surprising considering Craig's previous comments about the film franchise, expressing the wish to slit his wrists with broken glass rather than doing another one. However he was contracted to make five films so was cordoned into doing one more. This is worrying for two reasons. The first is obvious if you've seen Spectre, and that is there is a noticeable difference between when he wants to do the role compared to when he doesn't. If you watch Casino Royale then Spectre there is a clear quality change as Craig portrays the character, with him being a lot less bothered in the later film. On top of this, Casino Royale was released in 2006, which will be 14 years prior to this new film, and he is starting to get quite old, which in a genre which has become very action dependant, means there is a risk that we won't get the spectacle of scenes like the Parkour sequence of Casino Royale. However if Skyfall ( My favourite of the series ) proved anything, you can get good action from older actors. However even that was 8 years prior to this, and a lot can change in 8 years. Spectre is shown proof of this, with no scene really leaving me with the awe that Skyfall did, evening the opening, as amazing as it is, is very far removed as an action piece compared to the opening of Skyfall, with Bond in no real peril until the end of the sequence. Hopefully Bond 25 will be able to reprimand that.

The plot of the film has been pieced together as new facts were revealed by the production company, so if your wanting to go into the film blind skip this next paragraph, so you have been warned, News has had it that this film will be set some time after Spectre, which if you remember ended with Bond and Madeline Swan driving off together to live a more basic lifestyle, which has rings of the end of Casino Royale and even On Her Majesties Secret Service. The position of 007 has been taken by a new agent, played by Lashana Lynch, most notably seen in 2019's Captain Marvel. There is then set to be an event that causes Bond to return to the role of 007, an event most likely triggered by the new villain confirmed to be played by Rami Malek, rumoured to be called ShatterHand but that is very unlikely if you stop and considered that name a little more. So far no other cast has been confirmed to return but it will be fair to guess that Ralph Fiennes will return as M, Ben Withshaw as Q and Naomie Harris as Ms. Monneypenny after their roles in Spectre.

The film has been caught in a lot of set backs, the main one being the director change early into production. The film was originally written and directed by Danny Boyle, which was a very interesting choice and heralded a new direction for the series. However there were break downs in talks between himself and the studio and left the production before filming had started. The film is now under the helm of director Cary Joji Fukunaga, who has directed smaller drama films and worked on films such as the first chapter of It, which could again allow the series to head in a new direction. However as filming continued another set back occurred with an explosion on set and Daniel Craig having to go under minor surgery for his ankle ( Quoted Metro.com). However this has not stopped the film going ahead for April next year, which hopefully should stay as it is and not have to be effected by many more setbacks.

On the whole I would say that I am excited for this film, especially in the market which has become so heavily dominated by Superhero movies which have started to become very repetitive in cinema calendars. I am fair to say a bit of a Bond fan, with Skyfall being one of my go to action movies, and Casino Royale being a film I would put up as one of the best action movies. hopefully No time to die can bring the series back up to a high, with me walking away from Spectre feeling slightly underwhelmed ( Link to the Review Below ). Bond 25 will be a staple of the year for cinema, and will be an interesting landmark to see how audiences receive action films now, with Spectre being a decline in Box office sales after Skyfall being the only Bond film to break a billion dollars. however with a director change and Rami Malek on board there is no doubt to say that it will certainly be one to watch next April.
