It
would be fair to say that my thoughts on the previous Suicide Squad were.......
not positive but, frankly, quite fair. I have covered it a lot on this website,
which for a film I really don’t like is quite surprising, but how does DC’s reattempt
at its most lacklustre film compare? Well in one word: Insane. And that’s about
as much you can say without spoiling it so I’m going to have to go into some
territory in which you want to know nothing look away. The Suicide Squad is a
completely different film – its almost shocking to think these characters could
exist in the same universe. I love how this one behaves as a film; it is quite noticeably
not a formulaic superhero film and from the get-go feels very out of place in
the genre. It doesn’t hold your hand and overexplain, not getting caught up in
re-explaining every detail of what is going on and shows what you can get if
you just let a director make what they want. Simply put it’s filmmaking at its
purest, telling an interesting story of a group of rag-tag villains that you
really can connect to without having to walk you through every detail, and
leaves you in quite an uncomfortable situation where you don’t actually know
where this is going to go (if you’ve not watched the trailers that is). It’s
great to see a director being allowed to make what they want to make, especially
in such a way that James Gunn has, taking all the liberties with what you can
do with the characters and the action. At the end of the day what you end up
with is a solid, standalone 2 hours of fun, balanced with a great amount of
emotion for characters which you really shouldn’t care for. That’s what worked so well for me, is that in
the end of the day these are the bad guys, murder’s and psychopaths, and
throughout the film you constantly question them and flip opinions. There are
some issues with it, the script is a bit off in places and there are one or two
places where for me the music doesn’t quite work (which I can let go because overall
it works really well). Overall though I think it’s the sort of story I’ve been
waiting to see again from DC after Wonder Woman, showing you can make bold and
out their stories with superhero characters and come away with a new and different
film which sits well with audiences. One can only hope that we get more films
which change it up in the future.
