Before we start this review I will say again, Spoilers will be in this review. If you need to; go away and watch the film then come back when you've seen it. This movie starts off pretty much directly after Infinity War with Tony Stark ( Robert Downey Jn. ) floating in space with little hope, who gets rescued by Captain Marvel ( Brie Larson ). Jump ahead 5 years and all the Avengers are glum because 50% of all people are gone. When Ant Man ( Paul Rudd ) returns they devise a plot to get the infinity stones back and defeat Thanos. If that plot sounds confusing that's because it is, and something I felt throughout the film is that people may struggle to keep up with what is going on, especially considering the 3 hour run time. However for the most part I enjoyed this film, both as a movie goer and as a fan of this series. I like the idea of time travel they brought into the film and feels like a good way to offer a lot of nostalgia to long time fans and the performances from the cast are brilliant, especially Robert Downey Jn. There is a lot of noticeable character development from the last film and actually that helped with the story, as you feel for the characters and can see how the devastation has effected them. My favourite part of what this film does is its bravery. A lot of films in this genre and even based on previous works have the trouble of sticking to the source material incredible closely, meaning they don't take risks and really surprise us. The five year jump really changes that however, I certainly wasn't expecting them to do that and it allows for such a sudden change that you really get enjoyment for seeing how the universe that has been built has been changed. However: for as much as I liked it as a fan of the movies with endless fan service I did have some problems with it as a film. It is very weirdly paced, with it travelling extremely fast for me at some points then slowing right down a moment later, and the whole time travel bit for me started to drag on a bit with a bit too much fan service at some points. I think that's what got to me especially the second time around, the fact that it goes ' Hey look, remember that ' then moving on. One of the biggest bug bearers for me though was the time travel part of the movie. Apart from the fact that they just changes laws of time travel  (which they can do in their own universe) , it is very abrupt in the film, going ' Oh yeah lets just make a time machine, which was quite jarring. However, while being a very heavy watch and quite mentally taxing, it was at the end a good watch, it was emotional, there where some good laughs and as a conclusion to this monster of a film collection it works. I wasn't too surprised that they killed of Iron Man but the Captain America ending was very satisfying and genuinely surprising. I may need to watch it again but the ending suffered from a few movie tropes, most notably the ' Return of the King ' problem of too many endings ( but at a film series this large we can let it off for that one ) and the ' Revenge of the Sith' problem of just starting to jam everyone into their next starting positions for spinoffs and TV shows. Overall however I think it is defiantly a defining movie of this decade, and if you haven't seen it spare three hours of your life and give it a go, with a brilliant range of characters and a spectacular final battle there is something for everyone.
Contains Moderate bad language and fantasy violence.
My rating: 7/10 ( Good )
